Beach Safety for Pets: Tips for a Fun & Safe Day at Pet-Friendly Beaches

There’s nothing quite like a day of sun, sand, and sea with your dog by your side. For many pet owners, visiting a pet-friendly beach is a favorite way to enjoy the summer. However, just like with young children, our pets need special attention and care to stay safe while enjoying the surf.
At Express Vets Oakwood, we’re passionate about helping pet families make the most of their adventures together—safely. Here are some expert tips to ensure your beach day with your four-legged friend goes off without a hitch.
1. Choose a Pet-Friendly Beach
Not all beaches allow dogs, and those that do may have specific rules. Research in advance to find beaches that welcome pets and check for regulations such as leash laws, restricted hours, and waste disposal policies. Some beaches offer off-leash areas, while others may require pets to be leashed at all times.
2. Watch the Heat and Time of Day
Summer temperatures can climb quickly, making the beach a risky place for heatstroke or paw burns. Avoid the hottest part of the day—usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.—and plan your beach visit in the early morning or late afternoon.
Always test the sand with your hand or foot; if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.
3. Provide Plenty of Fresh Water and Shade
Dehydration is a serious risk for dogs at the beach. Bring a portable water bowl and plenty of fresh, cool water. Offer frequent water breaks, especially after play or swimming.
Set up a shaded area using an umbrella or tent so your pet has a place to cool off when needed.
4. Never Leave Pets Unattended
Even the most well-behaved dog can get into trouble at the beach. Strong currents, other animals, or even hot sand can become dangerous quickly. Always keep a close eye on your pet and stay nearby while they explore.
5. Use Pet-Safe Sunscreen
Dogs can get sunburned, especially on their noses, ears, and any areas with thin fur or exposed skin. Use sunscreen made specifically for pets—never human sunscreen, which often contains ingredients that are toxic to animals.
Apply the sunscreen 15–20 minutes before sun exposure and reapply if your dog has been swimming.
6. Rinse Off After Swimming
Saltwater, sand, and beach debris can irritate your pet’s skin and paws. After your beach visit, rinse your dog thoroughly with clean, fresh water to remove salt and sand. Pay special attention to their paws, ears, and coat.
Also, be cautious of beach water quality. Avoid letting your pet drink seawater, which can cause vomiting or dehydration.
7. Watch for Beach Hazards
Beaches are full of interesting smells and textures, but not everything your dog encounters is safe. Keep an eye out for:
- Sharp shells or broken glass
- Jellyfish or dead fish
- Trash or food scraps
- Fishing hooks and lines
Bring a pet first aid kit along just in case of minor cuts or injuries.
8. Know When to Call It a Day
Too much sun and excitement can wear your dog out quickly. Watch for signs of fatigue, overheating, or stress. If your dog begins panting heavily, drooling, or seems disoriented, find shade immediately and provide water.
End the day on a positive note with a relaxing walk and some downtime back at home.
